Lewis Hamilton began his ascent to the top of the motor sport world on this day in 1998 when he was signed to McLaren's driver development programme.
The then 13-year-old Hamilton was signed by McLaren boss Ron Dennis. Two years earlier, Hamilton had approached Dennis at the Autosport Awards and proclaimed, "Hi. I'm Lewis Hamilton. I won the British [Cadet Karting] Championship and one day I want to be racing your cars." Dennis wrote in Hamilton's autograph book: "Phone me in nine years, we'll sort something out then."
Ten years later, Hamilton would win the Formula 1 world championship at McLaren. It's safe to say the Briton made good on his promise to Ron Dennis.
