Alfa Romeo 159 Luigi Fagioli died on this day in 1952, less than a year after winning the French Grand Prix at the age of 53. He remains the oldest driver to have ever won a Formula 1 race, and today's Great Read looks at the Alfa Romeo 159 he drove to victory — the car that BRM and Lotus engineer Tony Rudd wished that he had designed. As a young engineer at Rolls-Royce, I needed a source of inspiration, like most people, and I looked towards the Alfa Romeo 158/159.... They were very well made. They would put a piece of rag over it if they saw you looking but the detail work was very nicely machined. There never seemed to be any shortage of money, for cars or drivers as we found out when we had to try and outbid them for Fangio.
