With the Austrian Grand Prix fast approaching, we felt it was only appropriate to highlight the country's most successful driver: Niki Lauda
Born in Vienna in 1949, Lauda shunned his family's business to start a fledgling career in motor sport. Making his grand prix debut in 1971 with March, Lauda quickly earned a reputation as a up-and-coming star, and soon moved to Ferrari in 1974.
What followed were some of the most talked-about years in grand prix history as Lauda, fresh from claiming his maiden World Championship in 1975, engaged in a legendary title battle the following year with McLaren's James Hunt.
It was during this title fight that Lauda suffered a terrible crash at the Nurburgring. Badly burned, Lauda was so critically injured that he was administered his last rites. However, in one of the most astonishing recoveries in sporting history, Lauda returned at the Italian Grand Prix, missing only two races since his Nurburgring accident. Covered in blood-soaked bandages, the Austrian finished fourth after an impossibly courageous drive.
Two more World Championships, one with Ferrari in 1977 and the last with McLaren in 1984 followed, cementing Lauda's legacy as one of the greatest drivers in Formula 1 history.
