Michelin accelerating change in MotoE™ with a new rear tyre that contains 52% sustainable materials
• Michelin's approach to motorsport mirrors its commitment to an increasingly sustainable future
• Michelin's rear tyre for the 2023 FIM MotoE™ World Championship contains 52 percent sustainable raw materials
• Beyond the use of sustainable materials in the manufacture of its tyres, Michelin stands out through its active, overarching resolve to reduce the environmental impact of its products

Michelin announced some time ago that it is committed to making all the tyres it manufactures from sustainable materials alone by 2050, with an interim average target of 40 percent Group-wide by 2030, as laid out in its Michelin In Motion plan.

Its involvement in the FIM MotoE™ World Championship dovetails perfectly with this strategic vision by enabling it to accelerate the development of innovative sustainable solutions, signed off in an extreme arena before potentially being carried over to Michelin road tyres. This use of sustainable solutions does not detract from the high-performance the firm’s partners have come to expect of its racing tyres, from the safety and grip they deliver, to long life.

When it comes to MotoE™, Michelin is ahead of the Group’s overall target for 2030. For 2023, it has effectively developed a new front and new rear tyre that now incorporate 34 and 52 percent sustainable raw materials respectively. These two tyres take their inspiration from the brand’s MotoGP™ range and are designed to match the characteristics of the new all-electric Ducati bikes that will feature in this year’s series.

To make its MotoE™ tyres, Michelin employs an extensive palette of biosourced and recycled sustainable raw materials, including:

  • Hevea latex (natural rubber)
  • Used truck and car tyres (Enviro rCB)
  • Orange and lemon peel (Limonene resin)
  • Pine-tree resin
  • Sunflower oil
  • Recycled scrap steel

The use of such materials makes a significant contribution to lessening the impact on the planet’s resources, while providing the high safety and performance standards expected of Michelin racing tyres.

MotoE™ tyres allocations for 2023

As in previous seasons, Michelin will provide the teams involved in the 2023 MotoETM World Championship with a single type of front and rear slick per race. Riders may use up to four new fronts and four new rears at each round, in addition to a bedded-in set from the previous race. In the case of wet weather, they will be able to fit bespoke, equally-versatile rain tyres, with a maximum allowance of three fronts and four rears per race.

FIM MotoE™ World Championship rounds take place within the framework of MotoGP™ weekends, with races lasting around 15 minutes (generally eight laps, depending on the venue) after two free practice and two qualifying (Q1 and Q2) sessions.

We are delighted to see how MotoE™ is evolving in 2023, including the introduction of new, high-performance Ducati bikes,” says Piero Taramasso, the manager of Michelin’s two-wheel motorsport programmes. “Michelin has worked hand-in-hand with Ducati to deliver an unprecedented level of performance for this all-electric series. Pre-season testing confirmed the progress that has been made, with lap times at Jerez and Barcelona down by three seconds. These results were achieved, I stress, with the contribution of tyres that contain an even higher proportion of sustainable materials, in perfect keeping with the Michelin Group’s strategy. The 2023 MotoE™ season promises to be very busy, with 16 races over eight weekends and the involvement of quality teams and riders. We will work with them all very closely throughout the campaign, from the mid-May opener at Le Mans [France] until the finale at Misano [Italy] on September 10.”

The first round of the FIM 2023 MotoE™ World Championship will take teams Le Mans-Bugatti, France, on May 13.
