The legendary Ayrton Senna died on this day in 1994.
The triple world champion was chasing down the Benetton of Michael Schumacher at the San Marino Grand Prix when his Williams FW16 left the track at Tamburello and impacted the wall at around 145mph. The Brazilian suffered massive head injuries and died at Bologna hospital later that evening.
Senna was known for many things. His mesmeric qualifying laps, his legendary battles with Alain Prost and his sheer desire and will to win. Away from the track, Senna possessed an eloquence and charisma that few drivers before or since have shared. Passionate about the welfare of his countrymen, Senna quietly donated millions of dollars to help underprivileged children in Brazil, a fact that only became public knowledge after his death.
To this day, when many people think of Formula 1, they think of Ayrton Senna.
