Mass frustration at the US GP - but Kimi just looked like a kid having fun
|
Kimi Antonelli all but secured the Formula 1 title with a champion's drive at the 2026 United States Grand Prix, writes Mark Hughes. Behind him, forlorn rivals failed to make their superior pace stick
Kimi Antonelli continues to find new ways to excel and his victory around the Circuit of the Americas was right up there with Monaco and Monza. Leading from pole and leaving Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc to fight it out behind him, his meticulous control of himself and his Mercedes was such that he asked less of the tyres than the Red Bull and Ferrari and got by on one stop less than them without ever looking under threat.
He thereby did his part in his championship quest perfectly, but it’s still not quite secured as George Russell and Lewis Hamilton retain tiny mathematical chances. But the fact that second (Russell) to fifth (Leclerc) in the championship are separated by just 11 points and contain drivers from four different teams suggests this would be a close-fought title but for Antonelli.

The most dramatic F1 race of all time? Mansell loses title to Prost at 1986 Australian GP
|
October 2016 | Nigel Roebuck
|
A Formula 1 title decider with more than one twist in the tale: Nigel Roebuck relives the thrilling lead battles; Prost's sensational comeback and, of course, Nigel Mansell's dramatic tyre blowout of the 1986 Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide
“It’s a long way down here, isn’t it?” said Alain Prost. “I must say I’m glad to have a chance of winning the title, even if it’s a small one…” This was Adelaide in October 1986, and Prost had that chance because of a brilliant drive in Mexico two weeks earlier.
