Tyre compounds vs raw pace

Mark Hughes: Tyre-wrecking Sepang threatens an F1 upset
|
Sepang’s brutally abrasive surface and restricted tyre allocation are turning this weekend into a strategic gauntlet where the right compound choice could matter more than raw pace.
Sepang’s surface was always pretty coarse back in the day, which, combined with plenty of long-duration fast corners, meant huge tyre degradation – and, crucially, a much bigger difference than usual between cars which could keep that degradation under control and those which could not. Well, it’s even more coarse now, nine years after F1 last visited and the early signs in practice today took us back to the 2010s as drivers suddenly realised just how quickly their grip was disappearing.

The wreck of Red Bull... and how the F1 team is fixing it
|
The departure of Christian Horner, Adrian Newey and Helmut Marko in 2025 left a void at Red Bull – and Max Verstappen was expcted to follow. Edd Straw looks back at the team's implosion and its 2026 reset.
Who knows what riches Max Verstappen was offered to lure him away from Red Bull Racing? A blank cheque, the keys to any kingdom he might desire and all the fringe benefits imaginable, plus promises of untold glories, have the power to turn any driver’s head, especially if they’re struggling to win races. Yet despite those temptations, in August he agreed to a new deal to stay put until at least the end of 2030. No matter what exit clauses there are, convincing him to put pen to paper is a resounding endorsement of a team badly in need of one.
