Boen on this day in 1967, the much-missed Gil de Ferran was an Indy 500 winner, with two Champ Car titles, and played a key role in the current success of McLaren's F1 team. He also still holds an enviable record of the fastest lap in a racing car. In today's Great Read from 2009, De Ferran recalled the epic feat.
De Ferran's all-time record lap, set on October 28, 2000, was the product of Honda and Penske doing everything possible to take pole position in the last round and earn with it the additional single point de Ferran needed to help wrap up that year's CART championship.
"Leading up to the race Penske did a lot of work on the aerodynamics to make sure our Speedway car was the best it could be and Honda came up with this stonker of an engine! It made over 1000bhp." |
