A complete weekend for the MICHELIN Power range
After the full resurfacing carried out in 2024, Phillip Island this year offered high grip levels but a bumpier surface. From Friday onwards, riders were able to test all front and rear compound combinations in cool, windy conditions.
The MICHELIN Power Slick Medium rear quickly stood out for its rapid warm-up and consistent performance over long runs, while at the front, both the Medium and Hard compounds received the best feedback.
The Practice session was marked by a spectacular improvement in lap times: eleven riders went under the previous lap record, a clear sign of the high performance level of the tyres. Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing) set the best time with a 1'26.492, improving the previous record set by Jorge Martin in 2023 by 0.754 seconds.
Record-breaking performances in the Tissot Sprint
On Saturday, the cold morning led riders to opt for softer tyres in qualifying, where Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Team) set a new all-time lap record of 1'26.465, securing pole position.
The Tissot Sprint, held on a track temperature of 32°C, showcased the adaptability of the MICHELIN Power range. All riders selected the Soft rear tyre, while the Hard front proved to be the most effective choice, though five riders preferred the Medium.
The race was won by Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing) in 19'03.971, ten seconds faster than the previous benchmark. Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse MotoGP Team) took second place, ahead of Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing).
A competitive Grand Prix and consistent performance
On Sunday, strong morning winds confirmed the wisdom of the previous day's decision to delay the Grand Prix start by one hour. When the lights went out at 3:00 p.m. local time, track temperature was 24°C with 21°C in the air — ideal conditions to fully exploit the potential of the MICHELIN Power Slick tyres.
Following Michelin's recommendations, the entire grid opted for the Hard front / Medium rear combination, ensuring stability, consistency, and grip throughout the 27 laps. Only Somkiat Chantra (LCR Honda) chose a Medium front.
The 2025 Liqui Moly Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix was won by Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse MotoGP Team) after a perfectly managed race. Fabio Di Giannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) finished second, ahead of Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing), third despite serving two long-lap penalties.
Piero Taramasso, Michelin Motorsport Two-Wheel Manager
"Phillip Island is always an exceptional challenge, and this 2025 edition proved it once again. Conditions were highly changeable, with cold, strong winds and then a sharp rise in temperature on Saturday afternoon. This allowed us to validate nearly all tyre combinations we had brought.
Riders were able to fully exploit the performance of the MICHELIN Power range: the Soft rear shone during the Sprint, while the Hard front / Medium rear pairing perfectly met the demands of the Grand Prix. The temperature differences between the two sides — typical of this asymmetric circuit — were very well managed thanks to the specific design of our tyres.
We also observed a notable increase in overall performance levels. Multiple lap records were broken, consistency over race distance was excellent, and rider feedback was extremely positive. All this confirms the relevance of our technical choices and the adjustments made since the 2024 resurfacing.
Phillip Island remains a unique circuit, where nature, wind, and speed combine to create extreme conditions. Seeing our tyres perform at such a level, with records and tight racing, is a great reward for the entire Michelin Motorsport team."
A positive technical outcome ahead of next round
The Australian weekend allowed Michelin to validate the coherence of its 2025 tyre range on one of the most demanding tracks of the championship.
The ability of the MICHELIN Power tyres to maintain grip, stability, and consistency under changing conditions strengthens rider and team confidence ahead of the next round of the season — the Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia, to be held at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit from 24–26 October 2025.
