Great Read: Donington, Britain's first true grand prix circuit |
October 2002 | Gordon Cruickshank |
Bernd Rosemeyer won the Donington Grand Prix on this day in 1937, but today, Britain's first true grand prix course now hosts a market, provides a car park and passes through walls and underneath buildings. Today's Great Read follows Gordon Cruickshank as he explores the site. Where in Britain can you still drive in the wheel tracks of Nuvolari, Rosemeyer and Lang? Or recapture for a fleeting moment the zing of supercharged V16s echoing among trees? Donington Park, that's where. And you don't have to be racing on Tom Wheatcroft's revived track. Even as a spectator, in your car or on foot, you can still reach parts of the pre-war track where your nostalgia can let loose. |

It's built for speed, but this Bugatti Chiron can just as easily stop traffic |
Only 80 examples of the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport were produced. This single-owner example is expected to sell for around £3m in the RM Sotheby's Tailored for Speed Collection auction |
Based on the fastest Chiron that Bugatti ever produced, the Super Sport was limited to 273mph for safety reasons — not that anyone told the designers who gave the car a body capable of achieving and sustaining a faster pace.
Its traffic-stopping looks is one of many reasons why the example being offered at RM Sotheby's Tailored for Speed sale is sure to command a lot of attention.
