An extraordinary stroke of luck paved Tiff Needell's way into racing, and committed him to a happy life of ducking, diving and hustling
Over the past seven years, on your behalf, I've had lunch with more than 80 motor racing characters. But this is the first in whose career I can claim to have played a small but significant part.
In the 1960s, Tiff Needell was just one of many thousands of teenage enthusiasts who had a burning desire to be a racing driver but entirely lacked the wherewithal to begin the process.
Then, in January 1971, the weekly magazine Autosport, of which I was the youthful editor, organised a readers' competition to win a new racing car.
