Great Read: IndyCar revolution that spawned some of the craziest racing cars ever |
October 2000 | Joe Scalzo |
IndyCar ended its season with a thrilling final race but — as we explore in our latest issue — the series is troubled, with an ancient Dallara spec chassis. Sixty years ago it faced the opposite problem when Lotus's success led to some of the craziest, most nightmarish cars ever seen at the Brickyard, as Joe Scalzo explains in our Great Read.
Тhe great Don Branson was, among many wonders and eccentricities, a tortoise. He abominated having to flop on his back in a race car. So, if there was anything that could make poor Branson feel silly, inept and infuriated it was the double whammy of 1) having the engine behind him instead of in front, and 2) the far worse torture of being forced to recline on his back instead of racing sitting straight up. Watching him go through the ordeal of doing so, you didn't know whether to giggle or groan. |
