| Great Read: 50 years on – John Frankenheimer's Journey to Grand Prix |
October 2022 | Richard Heseltine |
"I'm not saying it's my best film, but it was certainly one of the most satisfactory films I've made because I've had a Walter Mitty idea all my life about what would have happened if I'd really been a Ferrari driver. To be able to indulge your fantasies with ten-and-a-half million dollars is, I think, marvellous" John Frankenheimer, 1969
He was a big-picture man with visions of grandeur, willing to risk his hard-won credibility as a director and his studio's money to create the greatest motor racing movie of all time.
John Frankenheimer was nothing if not ambitious. Conflicted and conflict-inspiring, the New York-born auteur went for broke, refusing to let technology's inability to keep pace with his imagination stop him from creating his masterpiece. Half a century on from the release of Grand Prix, this celluloid classic is the most fondly remembered film from his bulging back catalogue; one that packed as many hits as misses... |

Watch cult movie Grand Prix with David Brabham & Alex Brundle |

Motor Sport has joined with Footman James, Scalextric and Classic & Sports Finance for our inaugural Cinema Club evening, giving readers the chance to watch a special screening of Grand Prix, the original F1 film.
But that's not all! The evening also includes an exclusive Q&A session with VIP guest David Brabham, whose father Jack appeared in the film back in 1966. The event is hosted by racer and commentator Alex Brundle.
From the thunder of V12 engines to the incredible shots of Monaco's harbour-front, and the real racing drivers behind the wheel, Grand Prix remains a visceral, high-octane tribute to a golden era of racing - a time when bravery was abundant and safety margins were vanishingly thin.
Now, almost 60 years on, we're bringing it back to the big screen in London in one special night for fans of motor sport and movie magic alike. |
