He had movie-star looks, was champion of Italy, and was in favour with Enzo: Eugenio Castellotti was the future of Ferrari until a tragic crash, 68 years ago today, as he attempted to reclaim the Modena lap record for Ferrari from Maserati's Jean Behra. Today's Great Read explores his glittering, but all too short career.
At the 1956 Mille Miglia, Eugenio Castellotti scored the greatest victory of his tragically shortened career. His nearest challenger – Ferrari team-mate Peter Collins – was more than 12min in arrears. His great Italian rival Luigi Musso of Rome was a further 22min back.
There was good reason to think that the improving Castellotti was Ferrari's future. Certainly he looked the part: darkly handsome; biceps and pecs bulging through tight T-shirt; matching trousers and convertible Cadillac; and shiny co-respondent shoes with built-up heels. He was catnip to the opposite sex.
