This second Grand Prix in a row at Misano, organised to replace the Kazakhstan round, is an exception but also a unique opportunity in the season. On a technical level, this double event can be very interesting for the teams and for Michelin, who will be able to collect more data on the same circuit in a short period of time. It is also an opportunity to further refine the settings of the bikes, and to test more solutions to increase performance and reduce lap times.
In addition, an official test session was held on Monday 9 September at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, the day after the Gran Premio Red Bull di San Marino e Della Riviera Rimini. This means that including the Gran Premio Pramac dell’Emilia-Romagna, Michelin’s partners will have ridden and raced for a total of seven days on the same circuit in just over two weeks.
For this second race in a row, the organisers are once again expecting a high attendance. Attractive ticket prices have been offered, and many Italians will certainly come to support their heroes – Italian riders make up 6 out of the 24 competitors in MotoGP. On Michelin’s side, despite the repetition of the location, this will not be treated as routine. Depending on the weather and other less tangible criteria, the teams of the French manufacturer are ready to deal with any unforeseen situations.
"After a race weekend and a test day here less than two weeks ago, we are relatively calm but we will still on our guard," says Piero Taramasso, Michelin's two-wheel racing manager. "We have seen a significant increase in performance, and after the generous track time we have had here in recent weeks, we can expect the bikes to benefit from very finely-tuned settings, and with our tyres, the riders will find all the consistency and versatility they need to push the limits of their machines. Most of the reference times were broken at the last Grand Prix, but we know that these records are there to be broken yet again. However, this will not be possible without the riders taking certain risks, and for this they need tyres that will give them confidence. Of course, the big unknown will be the weather, because we are now a little later in the season and by the sea, and the air can quickly become loaded with humidity."
For the 2024 Gran Premio Pramac dell’Emilia-Romagna, the tyre allocation will be exactly the same as that of the Gran Premio Red Bull di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini, in early September. Michelin’s partners will have at their disposal three symmetrical front compounds (Soft, Medium and Hard), while for the rear they will be able to choose between two rubber compounds (Soft or Medium). The latter will be asymmetric, with the right shoulder reinforced to cope with the configuration of the circuit, which has ten right-hand turns and six left-handers, over a length of 4.226 km.
In case of rain, Michelin will offer its MICHELIN Power Rain range in Soft and Medium compounds for both the front and rear, the latter of which will also be reinforced on the right side like the rear MICHELIN Power slicks.
Records to beat
The all-time circuit lap record of 1'30.304 was set by Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team), during Q2 at the previous Grand Prix.
The race lap record of 1'31.564 was set by Marc Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP), also during the previous GP.
The reference race duration of the Grand Prix is 41'33.421, and that of the Tissot Sprint is 19'56.502. The fastest lap time in the Tissot Sprint is 1'31.236.
The 2024 Gran Premio Pramac dell’Emilia-Romagna will start on Friday morning, 20 September, with a first practice session from 10:45 to 11:30. Then a second session, scheduled for the afternoon from 15:00 to 16:00 will allow the 10 fastest riders to directly access the second phase of qualifying (Q2). After a final free practice session on Saturday morning from 10:10 to 10:40, Q1 will allow two additional riders to progress to Q2 in order to determine, at the end of Q2, the starting grid for the weekend. The 13-lap Tissot Sprint will start on Saturday at 15:00, and that of the 27-lap Grand Prix is scheduled for Sunday, 8 September, exceptionally at 13:00 (instead of the usual 14:00).
