On 17 July 1937, during practice for the German GP, Bernd Rosemeyer fought his wayward Auto Union round the Nürburgring in 9min 46.2sec, a time that staggered the pitlane. By way of comparison, Rudolf Caracciola's Mercedes, second fastest at that point, had lapped in 10min 05sec.
Afterwards Rosemeyer teasingly suggested to Alfred Neubauer that his time was beyond reach. In fact, he said, he was prepared to pay 2000 marks to anyone who lapped under 9min 50sec.
