Emerson Fittipaldi moved to within striking distance of the Drivers' Championship on this day in 1972.
Starting on pole at the Austrian Grand Prix, a poor start allowed Jackie Stewart to slip past the Brazilian and take the lead for Tyrrell. However, Fittipaldi's Lotus 72 soon started to reel in the Scotsman, and the Lotus driver caught and passed Stewart on lap 24. The Brazilian never looked back and took the victory, a mere one second ahead of the second-placed McLaren of Denny Hulme.
The triumph almost clinched the title for Fittipaldi. Rival Hulme would have to win the next three consecutive races to have any hope of catching the Brazilian, so his third place finish at the following race in Monza saw the crowning of what was then the youngest World Champion.
