Gilles Villeneuve produced one of the most stunning Formula 1 moments of all time on this day in 1979.
Starting sixth at the Dutch Grand Prix, Villeneuve muscled his way into the lead when a blown tyre caused his rear suspension to spectacularly fail. For most drivers, that would be the end of their race. Not Gilles. Almost unbelievably, the Canadian wrestled his sparking, damaged Ferrari on three wheels around Zandvoort for almost an entire lap; the ultimate demonstration of someone who refused to give up. Sadly, when Villeneuve made it back to the pits, his suspension was too damaged to continue.
It was just one of a number of performances that made the tifosi worship Gilles, and is why the Canadian remains one of the most charismatic drivers in Formula 1 history.
