The legendary Enzo Ferrari passed away on this day in 1988.
Born in Modena, Italy in 1898, Il Commendatore made his motor-racing debut at the age of 21 and found some success competing for Alfa Romeo, where it's claimed a daring drive won him the Cavallino Rampante (Prancing Horse) emblem from the family of hero fighter pilot Francesco Baracca.
But Enzo found that his passion and talent lay more in management than driving, and he founded Scuderia Ferrari in 1929 to run competition Alfas, retiring permanently from the cockpit with the birth of his son Dino in 1932.
Regrouping after the Second World War, Enzo's empire rose from the destruction as a manufacturer in its own right. A Ferrari won the Mille Miglia in 1948 and the following year's Le Mans 24 Hours too.
In the decades since, Ferrari has become the most successful F1 constructor, with 242 race wins, 16 titles and 15 drivers' championships, attracting a passionate following — through thick and thin.
