Race winner and team founder Bruce McLaren was born on this day in 1937.
The son of a petrol station owner, Bruce entered his first race, a hillclimb, with his father's Austin 7 Ulster, when he was just 14. He would make his Formula 1 debut just six years later. In 1960, McLaren won the United States Grand Prix, becoming the youngest race winner in history, a record that would not be broken for more than 40 years.
The New Zealander founded McLaren Automotive in 1963. He shaped and guided the team to its first grand prix win in 1968. Although he was tragically killed in a testing accident in 1970, the team Bruce created has gone on to become one of the most successful in Formula 1 history.
