Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost crossed the line almost in unison on this day at the 1988 Hungarian Grand Prix.
Qualifying on pole, Senna was almost passed into turn 1 by the fast-starting Nigel Mansell, but just held off the Englishman; the turbo-powered Honda engine proving superior to Mansell's naturally-aspirated Williams-Judd.
Prost, after a poor opening lap, started to pick his way through the field. By lap 49, the Frenchman was right behind Senna. However, Prost was forced to drop back by vibrations caused by a loose wheel bearing.
Senna took the victory with Prost just half a second behind him. The victory was McLaren's 10th 1-2 finish of the season, a result which underlined the dominance of the iconic MP4/4. The result all but ensured McLaren the Constructors' Championship- they secured the Championship at the very next round in Belgium.
