The August edition of Motor Sport Magazine takes a look back on one of the most famous road races of all time, the Targa Florio.
Created in 1906 by wealthy Italian Vincenzo Florio, the route cut a path through the gorgeous Sicilian mountains. By the 1920's, the Targa Florio had become one of Europe's most important races, as neither the Le Mans 24 Hours nor the Mille Miglia had been conceived yet.
By 1970, the speeds of the cars had risen alarmingly. The lacklustre marshalling, spectator management and safety standards meant that the race was one with a fearsome reputation. After several fatal accidents, the event was dropped from the World Sportscar Championship in 1973. It continued on as a national event until 1977.
