One of Formula 1's cult heroes took their first win on this day in 1973.
"Super Swede" Ronnie Peterson took advantages of several accidents and mechanical failures to power his Lotus 72 to victory at the French Grand Prix.
Peterson built a reputation during his Formula 1 career as a fast, committed and supremely talented driver. Perhaps his best known partnership was with Colin Chapman's Lotus team, who gave Peterson all but one of his grand prix victories. Although the Swede also raced for Tyrrell in 1977, driving the iconic P34B six-wheeler.
It was a commonly-held view during the 1970's that in terms of raw speed, the Swede was the fastest driver on the grid. Peterson was tragically killed during the 1978 Italian Grand Prix. During a chaotic first-lap incident, the Swede suffered severe leg injuries, leading to an embolism with the charismatic Swede passing away the next morning.
At his funeral, the pallbearers included Åke Strandberg, James Hunt, Jody Scheckter, John Watson, Emerson Fittipaldi, Gunnar Nilsson and Niki Lauda. Such was the respect that Peterson had garnered from the Formula 1 community.
