History was made on this day in 1957 as a Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks achieved the first victory in Formula 1 by a British car.
Moss, who had qualified on pole, was doing well until his engine failed halfway through the race. Moss dutifully took over the sister Vanwall of teammate Tony Brooks, who was still recovering from injuries sustained at that year's Le Mans 24 Hours.
Moss rejoined in ninth place but immediately fought his way back into contention. After mechanical failures for the leading cars, the Englishman crossed the line to confirm Vanwall's triumph.
Over half a century later, Moss told the media that it was his favourite ever British Grand Prix that he took part in.
