Formula 1 legend Alberto Ascari was born on this day in 1918.
The son of racing driver Antonio, close friends with Enzo Ferrari, Albeto signed with the Scuderia in 1950 and was immediately competitive. He took his first podium in only his second race for the team, the 1950 Monaco Grand Prix. His first victory would come a year later at the fearsome Nurburgring,
In 1952, driving the mighty Ferrari 500, Ascari won a remarkable seven consecutive races in a row; a record not broken until 2013. It earned the Italian his first World Championship. Ascari repeated the feat in 1953, becoming Formula 1's first double World Champion. He remains the last Italian to win the Drivers' Championship.
Ascari was tragically killed in 1955 at Monza, testing a Ferrari sportscar. Such was the bond between Ascari and Enzo Ferrari that after his death, the team owner distanced himself from his drivers to avoid repeating the grief he suffered after Ascari's death.
