Mika Hakkinen came out on top to win a chaotic Austrian Grand Prix on this day in 1998.
Qualifying was an unusual affair. Pole position was claimed by the Benetton of Giancarlo Fisichella and second place went to the Sauber of Jean Alesi.
The race very quickly descended into chaos at the start, with multiple collisions at turn one and turn two. At the restart, Hakkinen pulled away from the Ferrari of Michael Schumacher, who would later lose his wing following a trip to the gravel.
Hakkinen would go onto claim victory but the drive of the day undoubtedly was from teammate David Coulthard. Having lost his front wing in the opening lap chaos, Coulthard pitted for a replacement and found himself at the back of the field. The Scot began to charge through the field, going from 14th at the start to seventh on lap 16. He would remarkably finish just five seconds behind teammate Hakkinen for a McLaren one-two in Austria.
