On this day in 1991, the small Mazda car firm somehow slayed the giants of Mercedes, Jaguar, Peugeot with its iconic 787B to win Le Mans – the car's designer, Nigel Stroud, remembers the journey in today's Great Read
Picture the unlikely scene at Le Mans: manufacturer muscle falling short, leaving a small squad like Glickenhaus to take the most unlikely of wins in the 24-hour race.
In 1991, a scenario of similarly long odds actually did play out, as the unfancied Mazda squad took victory. Using a finely-honed car design, superior fuel economy, clever politicking of the rules and a heroic final stint from Johnny Herbert, they defeated the might of Mercedes, TWR-Jaguar and Peugeot. It was true David vs Goliath stuff.
