Gilles Villeneuve died on this day in 1982.
The legendary Canadian was taking part in qualifying for the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder when he collided with a slow-moving Jochen Mass, launching his Ferrari into the air. Villeneuve sustained critical spinal injuries and died later that night.
Villeneuve built a reputation as a prodigiously gifted driver, one who fought hard, never gave up and always delighted the crowds, especially his adoring tifosi.
Such was Villeneuve's legacy that the grand prix track in Montreal, Canada, was renamed to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
On the start-finish line are the words "Salut Gilles".
