America's first Formula 1 World Champion, Phil Hill, was born on this day in 1927.
Described as a thoughtful and gentle man, markedly different to the usual debonair playboy drivers of the 1960's, Hill captured the 1961 World Championship driving for Ferrari.
Equally talented in sportscars, Hill was a three-time Le Mans 24 hours winner, as well as a three-time 12 hours of Sebring winner.
After retiring from racing, Hill became a world-leading expert on classic cars, judging the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance no less than 40 times. Hill died in California in 2008.
