Ayrton Senna swept through the pack to take victory at the 1990 season opener in Phoenix on this day.
Qualifying only fifth, the Brazilian charged through the field in his V12-powered McLaren MP4/5B. The then-double world champion was surprised by a young Jean Alesi, who daringly repassed Senna in his lowly Tyrrell. The two podium-sitters were full of praise for each other after the race.
