Senna and Hamilton: making sense of the comparisons

Dear subscriber,

IAustin Lewis Hamilton duly clinched his third world championship, and there’s no reason why anyone should be surprised. Whatever the era in grand prix racing, enthusiasts have always argued about who is the greatest driver of the moment, and that will never change. Agreeing on who is the fastest tends to be more straightforward.

They are, after all, not necessarily one and the same. Jody Scheckter, for example, described Gilles Villeneuve as “the fastest racing driver here has ever been,” and offhand I can think of none quicker that I have ever seen, but pure speed is not the whole of it. Jochen Rindt, for example, I always thought the quickest of his time, but to me Jackie Stewart was the greater all-round driver.
