Located in the heart of the vast Motorland Aragón complex, the Alcañiz circuit was inaugurated in 2009 and hosted a MotoGP Grand Prix for the first time in 2010. In 2023, the 5.077 km layout — run counterclockwise, with 10 left-hand corners, 7 right-hand corners, and two straights, the longest of which stretches 968 meters — underwent major renovation work. The entire track was resurfaced, and MotoGP bikes rode on it for the first time at the end of August 2024.
To prepare for the June 2025 round, the Michelin Motorsport teams relied on the data collected the previous year, while also anticipating possible changes in track conditions and weather patterns due to the different time of year.
"In this region of Spain, a three-month shift in the calendar introduces many unknowns," explains Piero Taramasso, Two-Wheel Motorsport Manager at Michelin. "Additionally, this circuit is not heavily used, which raises further questions about grip levels — especially since we still don't know how the new asphalt will evolve over time. Fortunately, we had a solid database, and thanks to our engineers and forecasters, we were able to define the optimal tire profile for this challenge."
Against this backdrop, Michelin Motorsport decided to modify the front Hard tire's casing, making it stiffer. At the rear, riders will have access to a new Soft compound, designed to offer more consistent performance — not only during the Tissot Sprint but also throughout the full-length Grand Prix, if that is the choice of their teams.
To determine the best tire allocation for the event, Michelin engineers also considered the circuit's layout, featuring long straights — where bikes experience high loads and speeds — as well as several technical corners that require effective thermal management and strong braking stability.
"Turn 2 will be particularly tricky," adds Taramasso. "It's a right-hander that comes after a sequence of left-hand corners, making it more difficult to maintain temperature on that side of the tire. This round is known for being challenging, but we've taken all necessary measures to ensure that, as always, our partners can chase records and deliver spectacular races thanks to the performance of our tires."
For the 2025 GoPro Grand Prix of Aragón, Michelin Motorsport will offer front tires in Soft, Medium, and Hard compounds — all symmetrical. At the rear, riders will be able to choose between a revised Soft compound and a Medium compound suited for higher temperatures. The rear tires will be asymmetrical, with a reinforced left shoulder to handle the greater number of left-hand corners.
In case of rain, Michelin will provide its MICHELIN Power Rain tires, available in Soft and Medium compounds for both the front and rear. As with the MICHELIN Power Slicks, the rear rain tire will also feature a reinforced left shoulder.
This year, the GoPro Grand Prix of Aragón race weekend will begin on Friday, June 6, with the first free practice session (10:45–11:30), followed by a second session in the afternoon (15:00–16:00). The ten fastest riders will gain direct access to the second phase of qualifying (Q2). A final free practice session will take place on Saturday morning (10:10–10:40), before Q1 gives two additional riders a chance to join Q2. The final grid will be set at the end of Q2.
The Tissot Sprint (11 laps) will take place on Saturday at 15:00, while the Grand Prix (23 laps) is scheduled for Sunday, June 8, at 14:00.
