| Great Read: Lunch With... Brian Henton |
A very happy birthday to British racing ace Brian Henton. He won at every level on his way to F1, but failed to score so much as a point when he got there. The real story, though, is that he chanced upon racing at all Some youngsters discover motor racing through family influence, others stumble upon it by chance. Growing up in post-war Britain, Brian Henton barely knew such a thing existed – until his own wilful disobedience sparked an improbable chain of events. The key ingredients? Some fireworks, a flooded home and a bus trip to Derby. To join the dots, the 71-year-old – still a highly active businessman – suggests we meet in The Garden Room Restaurant at The George in Stamford, Lincolnshire, where he opts for a seafood double: salmon and gravlax in dill & mustard sauce, with lobster benedict to follow and a pint of Diet Coke by way of accompaniment. | Final chance to save on historic Castle Combe Autumn Classic |
Wiltshire's Castle Combe Circuit is set to turn back the clock once again for its Autumn Classic historic racing festival on 20-21 September. |
This Royal Automobile Club award-winning event will celebrate the race track's 75th anniversary – a milestone depicted in this year's official souvenir programme cover artwork that shows the classic battle that took place in October 1950 between the then rising star, Stirling Moss, and noted local driver Tony Crook – both in Frazer Nash cars.
To commemorate this, a special display of unique racing cars from the circuit's first five years (1950-1955) will take pride of place in a special display marquee in the heart of the show – including both Moss and Crook's aforementioned machines.
There will also be vintage bands, a classic car auction courtesy of Dore & Rees, hundreds of classic display cars and, of course, wheel-to-wheel racing from the likes of the GT & Sports Car Cup, HRDC, Mini7 Racing Club, Formula Junior, Superformance Ferrari, Classic Sports Car Club, FISCAR and Frazer Nash.
Discounted advanced admission tickets available until midnight on Friday (19 September). Tickets then available on the gate both days. Kids aged 16 and under go free.
