Yamaha may be the last manufacturer to build a four-stroke V4 MotoGP bike but it was the first factory to build a premier-class V4, which introduced a configuration that won the last 18 500cc world championships
Yamaha's MotoGP department found itself in the doldrums in the early 1980s, not unlike the last few seasons. The company may have won 1978, 1979 and 1980 500cc/MotoGP world championships with 'King' Kenny Roberts and its 0W48 inline-four, but its engineers knew they needed something better to stay competitive with Suzuki.
