Barely two weeks after leaving the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, Michelin and its partners returned to the venue for the Gran Premio Pramac dell'Emilia-Romagna.
Following the test session, which took place the day after the Gran Premio Red Bull di San Marino e Della Riviera Rimini, the teams had a wealth of data to successfully take on this latest race weekend. However, as Europe transitions to autumn, the reduced hours of sun and the heavy rain that fell on the Emilia Romagna region until Friday morning affected the first practice session. Then, as the asphalt of the circuit regained its grip levels, reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) beat the all-time lap record that he set two weeks earlier – a time that he improved on yet again the following day, with a lap of 1'30.031, which is now the MotoGP lap time reference at Misano.
"We had some uncertainties after the rain, but the track quickly regained a good level of grip and our partners set a strong pace," said Piero Taramasso, Michelin's two-wheel racing manager. "Given that we raced here less than two weeks ago, which allowed the teams to work on more precise settings, we expected several records to be broken. However, the pace set during the 27 laps of the Grand Prix, where the level of attack did not weaken from the first to the last corner, was simply exceptional. The duration of the Grand Prix was reduced by almost 19 seconds, which represents an improvement of more than seven-tenths per lap compared to the previous Grand Prix. This performance speaks volumes about the quality of our tyres, and in addition, we were able to see that various rubber compounds fitted to the front and rear wheels could work well. For the Grand Prix, the vast majority of riders chose the Medium compound for both the front and the rear, but the 4th place of Marco Bezzecchi (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team), who raced with the Soft compound on the rear, and who rode at a similar pace to the leaders, highlighted the consistent performance and longevity of our entire range. Without a doubt, we leave Misano with the feeling of a job well done!"
For the 2024 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, Michelin’s partners had three symmetrical front compounds (Soft, Medium and Hard) at their disposal, and two asymmetric rears in Soft and Medium. Given the configuration of the circuit, with its ten right-hand turns and six left-handers, over its 4.226 km, the rear tyres benefited from a reinforced right shoulder.
On Saturday afternoon, the Tissot Sprint was won by Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team), ahead of Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) and Enea Bastianini (Ducati Lenovo Team).
The Tissot Sprint lap record improved from 1’31.236 to 1’30.792, thanks to the performance of Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo team), and the race duration was reduced from 19'56.502 to 19'50.237, which is very significant for a 13-lap race.
On Sunday, the Grand Prix was won by Enea Bastianini (Ducati Lenovo team), ahead of Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) and Marc Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP).
Marc Marquez's previous race lap record was lowered from 1'31.564 to 1'30.877, again by Francesco Bagnaia.
The new reference duration of the Grand Prix at Misano is 41'14.653, compared to the previous best time of 41'33.421 which was set on 8 September.
The Gran Premio Pramac dell'Emilia-Romagna was the last Grand Prix in Europe before the grand finale in Valencia (Spain) in November. Next weekend, Michelin and its partners will meet on the Mandalika circuit (Indonesia) for the Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia, and this will be followed by four more rounds in the region, in Japan, Australia, Thailand and Malaysia.
